B.M.M.A.A. DISPLAY DAY FOR MEN’S GROUP MOORABOOL SHIRE

10/12/2015

On the Thursday 10th December 2015 the club hosted another “mini” open day for the men from the Moorabool Shire’s Planned Activity Group.  The group consisted of older and frail men, and their support staff, from the Aged and disability sector who live within the shire; coming from Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, to the border of Ballarat.
A glorious day was bestowed upon the group by the weather gods, giving us sunny skies, warm temperatures with a gentle cross breeze over the field. A far cry from last year’s conditions which was cold windy and wet; ideal for flying ducks!
There was a good smattering of members turning out on a work day, with 6 all up giving their time, providing the Men’s group with plenty of interest with a variety of aircraft on hand, get up close and see the guys fly.
Member, Gary Sunderland, gave a presentation on early aero modelling with his free flight rubber band powered model which performed brilliantly. Taking off out of his hands and climbing gently, spiralling onwards and upwards toward the sun, catching a thermal, and appearing as if it would continue to climb out of site never to be seen again.  Thankfully it came down just beyond the fence line near the trees.
Other members, including Peter, PVA, brought out a small collection of his models, (about 500, it looked like to me) well, not quite, and demonstrated a variety of flying Esky lids, i.e. foamies, included, was a ducted fan model, which had the men’s group fascinated by the technology and variety of models and construction materials that are available now.
The group was enthralled by the display and presentation of aircraft on hand, with some of the group attending last year’s display, were just as excited to see it all again, while those who were seeing it for the first time were completely fascinated. You could see the interest by via the bombarding of Club Members with lots of questions about aeromodelling. Fantastic to see.
Group members were captivated to see and hear displays by Club Member Gary Thiele giving the group an aerobatic display with a petrol powered Yak tearing up the sky, followed by President Michael and Member Ken Mollison, performing some high G force manoeuvrers with their Scanners, while I flew my electric twin around the sky with gay abandonment.
It was a most impressive and successful morning for the group, having experienced aero modelling up front, seeing and hearing model aircraft that went way beyond their expectations.
By lunch time the group left for Stoney's with an indelible impression of a great time put on by B.M.M.A.A. This was evident at lunch as group members continued to rave about what they had seen at the field.

The morning mini display was a great opportunity for the Bacchus Marsh Club to present itself as a very proactive group in the local community, seeking to assist other groups and individuals while promoting the benefits that come from being involved in the sport of aero modelling.

Many, many thanks to all Members who were able to give their time and enthusiasm in making a great day for all who attended, a warm and welcoming occasion for a group of men, who have limited opportunity to engage in social activity and having another successful open day. Let’s try and make it again for 2016.

Thank you all.

BMMAA Tractor Pull Display Ballan 15 Feb 2015

10/12/2015

The Club this year, like it has for a number of years, was invited to attend the annual tractor pull event at Ballan. In the last couple of years the participation has been down based on weather and the lack of a suitable runway so all types of models could take off and land. Well this year like last year, Geoff Bourke and his trusted Bobcat took care of this issue and provided a very reasonable surface.  It is difficult as the runways that is prepared is only used once a year and to maintain them can be a challenge. One thing is for sure, if Geoff did not do the work that he did, we would not fly at all as the surface would be just too rough. It also does not help that sheep use the paddock to keep the grass down. The runways this year are probably the best we have seen and proved to be a winner with many of the pilots. Still a bit short for the big jets, but the sport jets seemed to go OK. A few more meters Bourkie and she would be right…

So we started to arrive by 8:00 am onwards and for the next hour or so, pilots raised shelters and placed their beloved chargers on show to all to see. We had a great area allocated to us by the Ballan Committee and had a perfect spot to sell our raffle tickets. This year we had an electric cub with radio all ready to go.  Would have been a great first model to try your hand in model aviation.

As it was, a grandmother won the prize for her grandson so she was ecstatic in winning the cub. Well done.  Hopefully, he will enjoy our hobby and continue to bigger and better things.

As the photos will show, the contingent of models was excellent with probably over 50 models of all shapes and sizes. Ken Mollison bought out his big L39 and F16 for static display, but tried to fly his sport jet as did Peter Stefurak. Peter bought out his Falcon jet had a great flight with many of the spectators stopping to have a good look at what was going on.  Ken had some engines problems with the Xcalibur with a flame-out our shortly after take-off. He did have his L39 so gave that a engine run to make sure all was well, but the fuel pump was not playing the game. The crowed that were present still loved it, especially when Ken applied the smoke. No doubt it will be another show stopper for the future.

The crowed was also entertained with many other models types from electrics to large size gasses. Each one bought its own style of flying and thrills for the spectators. This year we had the helicopters to show off their 3D abilities and added another dimension to the display. Peter (PVA) had a whole fleet of models of his own plus his 7 cylinder engine which sounds awesome.

Weather wise the day itself started off fantastically with blue skies and no wind. It was a little cool but we all knew that was no going to last. Expected temperatures were going to be in the mid thirties’ by the afternoon and by 2:00 pm is was getting hot. Surprisingly the wind dropped off and was not a real problem for many of the crew.
See you then... Ed
